Frequently asked questions
We know that Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a new concept to many people, so we do our best to not just ensure that you get the results you want when you train with us, but that you have the knowledge you need to understand what EMS is all about. Learn the basics below!
Will I Sweat During EMS Training?
Yes, you can expect to sweat during these workouts! Your muscles will be contracting and working hard. That’s how you’ll get such great benefits so quickly.
Will I be sore after EMS training?
Yes, just like any other full body workout, you will feel the effects afterwards. Our certified professional trainers can talk to you about how to best recuperate after a strength training workout.
What can I expect on my first visit?
You will start each training session by changing into a specifically designed set of undergarments. The undergarments are designed to fit under our suits and conduct electricity. During your first, free trial session we will provide you with a set to use. Your trainer will wet down the electrodes on the suit and get you strapped into the suit.
Your trainer will ask you about any areas of concern and connect your suit to the EMS machine. You will then begin your personal training session where you will be led through a series of movements and exercises based on your comfort level and fitness goals. SmartFit’s workouts are quick, efficient and low-impact on your joints, tendons and ligaments.
The machine generates low electrical pulses that will flow through the electrodes into your major muscle groups. The stimulation feels like a tingling or buzzing sensation but it is not painful! During your workout, your trainer will be constantly asking you how you feel, how hard the movements are and if you can handle more resistance. Each and every workout is customizable to your fitness goals.
We will encourage you to take a quick water break half way through your 20-minute workout. Finally, your trainer will help you get out of the EMS training suit and you’ll change back into your street clothes. The entire process will take about 30-35 minutes.
Should I exercise in between sessions?
You should not engage in strength training exercises in between EMS sessions. You can, however, do light to moderate cardio workouts. We encourage you to talk to our certified professional trainers about what type of workout is safe in between EMS training sessions in your particular case.
Is EMS training safe?
Yes, EMS training is FDA approved!
How should I dress for EMS training?
When you arrive for your appointment, we will provide you with an XBody workout outfit designed to work with the EMS device. This outfit is comfortable and is necessary for maximum results!
How much EMS training do I need in order to be effective?
Two 20-minute workouts per week is all you need! Each 20-minute workout is equivalent to a 90-minute full body workout because of the muscle contractions caused by the EMS device. Expect to see results much faster than you would from a traditional workout program.
Can I eat whatever I want while doing this program?
Just like any fitness and weight loss program, a proper diet is a big part of achieving maximum results. The certified professional trainers at SmartFit still encourage you to eat a healthy diet high in lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. But, of course, do not be afraid to enjoy a treat in moderation!
Are all EMS training sessions the same or are they tailored to my needs?
We tailor each workout to your individual needs and focus on the areas that you want to work on the most. Each workout is a mix of cardio and strength training designed just for you.
How safe is EMS training for beginners?
EMS training is safe for beginners when conducted under the guidance of a certified trainer. The electrical pulses used in EMS are controlled and adjusted to fit your fitness level, ensuring that your muscles are activated without risking injury. Trainers will gradually increase the intensity of your sessions as your body adapts, making EMS a gentle introduction to muscle strengthening for those who are new to exercise.
Can EMS help with injury recovery?
Yes, EMS is often used in rehabilitation to assist with injury recovery by strengthening muscles that have weakened due to disuse. The electrical pulses stimulate blood flow and muscle activation, which can speed up recovery times for certain injuries. It’s commonly used by physical therapists to help patients regain strength after surgery or to manage chronic pain conditions like lower back issues.
Are there any side effects of EMS training?
While EMS is generally safe, there are a few conditions where it might not be suitable, such as for people with pacemakers, epilepsy, or those who are pregnant. The most common side effect is mild muscle soreness, similar to what you’d experience after a regular workout. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting EMS if you have any medical concerns.
How long should I wait between EMS sessions?
For beginners, it’s recommended to have at least three days of rest between EMS sessions to allow your muscles to recover fully. As your body adapts to the workout, you can increase the frequency to two sessions per week. It’s essential to give your muscles time to heal and grow, similar to traditional strength training, to prevent overuse and maximize your results.
Is EMS training suitable for weight loss, or is it more for muscle toning?
EMS training is effective for both weight loss and muscle toning. The electrical impulses increase muscle activity, leading to a higher calorie burn even after the session ends. This helps with fat reduction while simultaneously building lean muscle mass. When combined with a balanced diet, EMS can be a powerful tool for achieving a leaner, more toned physique without spending hours in the gym.
Will EMS training help with posture and back pain?
Absolutely! EMS training targets deep core muscles and postural muscles that support your spine, which are often overlooked in regular workouts. By strengthening these muscles, EMS can help alleviate back pain and improve your posture. Many clients notice reduced discomfort in their lower back and better overall alignment after a few weeks of consistent training.
Is EMS training effective for older adults?
Yes, EMS is an excellent option for older adults because it’s low-impact and can be tailored to individual fitness levels. It helps improve muscle strength, flexibility, and circulation without putting stress on the joints. EMS can be particularly beneficial for seniors looking to maintain mobility and muscle tone with minimal risk of injury.
